A Curated Clinic Network — Built for International Dental Patients
Our Selected Dental Clinic Network in Costa Rica
One of the most difficult parts of planning dental treatment abroad is not deciding whether Costa Rica is interesting. It is deciding which clinic you should actually consider.
Costa Rica has many registered dentists and dental clinics. The official directories of the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica are an important starting point for professional and regulatory verification. But a directory does not answer every question an international patient needs to ask.
SmileBridge adds another layer: curation, international-patient fit, professional relationships, and destination coordination.
We do not certify or accredit dental clinics. We decide which clinics we are willing to work with through our own invitation and selection process. To understand that process in detail, read how SmileBridge selects the dental clinics in our network and why a curated clinic network matters for international patients.
This clinic network is one of the foundations of our Dental Destination Management Company (DDMC) model: the clinic manages the clinical treatment, while SmileBridge helps manage the international patient journey around that care.
Why the Clinic Selection Process Matters
When you search for dental treatment abroad, you may find dozens of clinics, hundreds of reviews, different price structures, different treatment packages, unfamiliar credentials, and marketing claims that are difficult to compare from a distance.
The challenge is not simply finding a clinic. It is understanding whether a clinic has the relevant capabilities, communication style, international-patient experience, and working structure that fit the type of journey you are considering.
That is why SmileBridge does not operate as an open directory or listing marketplace.
We build a limited network intentionally, through invitation, review, professional interaction, and the decision that a working relationship makes sense within the SmileBridge international-patient model.
What “Selected” and “Curated” Mean at SmileBridge
“Selected” does not mean SmileBridge has certified a clinic.
“Curated” does not mean we claim that every clinic outside our network is inferior.
It means something much more specific:
SmileBridge has chosen a group of clinics with which we are willing to build an ongoing professional relationship and introduce international patients into a coordinated journey.
Our goal is not to create the largest clinic directory in Costa Rica. It is to maintain a manageable network that supports the type of international patient experience SmileBridge is designed to coordinate.
How We Select Clinic Partners
Our internal selection framework considers several dimensions that are particularly relevant to international dental care.
Regulatory and Professional Standing
Professional registration and legal practice requirements are the baseline. We review the relevant professional information available through the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica and consider the clinical roles and specialties of the professionals involved.
The Colegio also establishes that dental clinics must have a dental regent responsible for compliance with applicable professional rules. Learn more about dental clinic regency requirements.
Relevant Clinical Capabilities
Not every clinic needs to provide every type of dentistry. We consider whether the clinic has capabilities relevant to the types of cases that may be referred to it, including implant dentistry, full-arch rehabilitation, oral surgery, prosthodontic treatment, periodontal care, bone grafting, and complex restorative dentistry where applicable.
Clinical suitability for an individual patient is always determined by the licensed dental professionals evaluating that patient.
Experience With International Patients
International dental care has operational demands that ordinary local treatment may not have. We look for clinics that understand the importance of remote communication, defined travel windows, treatment staging, temporary and final restorations, future visits, documentation, and follow-up after the patient returns home.
Communication and Responsiveness
Patients need clear information before they board an international flight.
We value clinics that communicate professionally, respond predictably, explain what is preliminary versus final, and collaborate effectively with SmileBridge when records, schedules, or patient questions need attention.
English-Language Communication
English-language communication is an important part of international-patient fit for the U.S. and Canadian markets we primarily serve. We consider whether the clinic can communicate treatment information clearly in English through the stages relevant to the patient journey.
Diagnostic and Treatment-Planning Resources
We consider whether the clinic has appropriate access to the diagnostic and treatment-planning resources required for the procedures it provides, including three-dimensional imaging such as CBCT when clinically indicated.
Those resources may be available directly within the clinic or through an appropriately coordinated external provider. What matters is that the clinical team can obtain the information necessary for responsible planning.
Implant Systems and Prosthetic Workflow
For implant cases, we consider the systems and restorative workflow used by the clinic, including access to documented implant components and prosthetic support.
The specific implant system, surgical approach, materials, and prosthetic design remain clinical decisions made by the treating dental team.
Laboratory Workflow
Dental laboratory coordination can be particularly important in full-arch and complex restorative cases. Some clinics may work with in-house laboratories, while others use established external laboratory relationships.
We consider whether the laboratory workflow can support the treatment schedule and communication needs of an international patient.
Treatment-Proposal Transparency
We value proposals that help patients understand what is being discussed, what is included, what may change after in-person evaluation, what is temporary versus final, and how the treatment may be staged.
SmileBridge can help patients prepare questions about a proposal, but clinical recommendations and fees remain the responsibility of the clinic.
Documentation and Continuity
International patients may need records after returning home. We value clinics that can provide appropriate treatment documentation, imaging, implant-system information, and relevant records that support future maintenance and continuity of care.
Logistical Compatibility
Because SmileBridge operates as a DDMC, the clinic must also be able to work within a coordinated international patient journey.
That can include communication around arrival dates, appointments, treatment stages, postoperative follow-up, transportation timing, and future visits.
Professional Relationship and Trust
Some of the most important qualities become visible only through a working relationship.
Over time, we learn how a clinic communicates, how it handles schedule changes, how it collaborates when a patient has questions, and how it works with SmileBridge around the international-patient experience.
This ongoing professional relationship is one reason curation is different from simply publishing a list of clinics.
Our Clinics Trust SmileBridge Too
The relationship works in both directions.
Patients trust SmileBridge to help them navigate an unfamiliar dental journey in Costa Rica.
Our clinics trust SmileBridge to help manage and support their international patients outside the treatment room.
That includes destination logistics, appointment coordination, travel support, accommodation guidance, transportation, companion logistics, and the broader non-clinical patient experience.

The Clinic Is Part of a Larger Patient Journey
SmileBridge does not simply introduce a patient to a clinic and disappear.
The clinic is an essential partner inside a broader journey that can include:
- Before travel: orientation, records coordination, clinic connection, treatment-proposal questions, appointment planning, hotel guidance, and travel preparation.
- During the stay: airport and local transportation coordination, accommodation support, appointment logistics, companion or solo-traveler support, and a familiar non-clinical point of contact.
- At the clinic: clinical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, procedures, medications, and clinical follow-up provided by licensed dental professionals.
- After treatment: departure planning, future-visit coordination, records, and non-clinical support around later treatment phases when required.
This is the practical expression of our DDMC model.
Our clinics take care of your dental treatment. SmileBridge helps take care of your journey.
What Patients Can Expect From the SmileBridge Network Model
Patients connected through SmileBridge can expect our network model to emphasize:
- professional and regulatory verification as a baseline;
- relevant clinical capabilities for the case being considered;
- experience with international-patient workflows;
- clear communication;
- appropriate diagnostic and treatment-planning resources;
- transparent discussion of treatment stages and proposals;
- coordination with SmileBridge around the non-clinical journey;
- documentation and planning for future treatment phases where applicable.
These are internal selection priorities, not guarantees of a particular clinical outcome.
Clinical Decisions Always Belong to Licensed Dental Professionals
SmileBridge does not diagnose, prescribe, determine candidacy, choose implant positions, decide surgical techniques, or design prosthetic treatment.
Every clinical decision is made by the licensed dental professionals evaluating and treating the patient.
SmileBridge’s role is to curate the provider network, help the patient understand the journey, and coordinate the destination experience around the clinic’s clinical plan.
How Patients Access the Clinic Network
The clinics in the SmileBridge network are introduced through our advisory process rather than presented as a public ranking.
We first try to understand the patient’s dental situation, goals, available records, travel circumstances, and the type of treatment being explored.
SmileBridge can then connect the patient with one or more relevant selected clinic options for professional evaluation.
The dentist determines clinical suitability. The patient decides whether they are comfortable proceeding.
